Our story does not begin with slavery. Slavery interrupted it. Black Seed: The Expanded Edition grows the original planting guide into a full vision—from the counting bones of ancient Africa and the pyramids of Kush, to the Black Wall Streets our great-grandparents built and rebuilt, to a future of three hundred cities where a single dollar goes around thirty-three times before it leaves.
Inside are real numbers and real history, with every fact sourced: where our $2.1 trillion in buying power goes today, the simple formula that turns one dollar into many, the contracts and global markets waiting for Black-owned businesses, why health is the first wealth, and a step-by-step map any neighborhood can follow. Then walk through a day in New Greenwood, 2126—and see what a free, owning, united people can build.
This book is also a fundraiser. $9.99 gets you the book, and every dollar you choose to give above that goes straight to supporting Platinum Ink Publishing, a Black-owned company. Plant the seed. Watch what grows.
A Letter to the Reader
Dear Reader,
The first edition of this book was short on purpose. It was a seed: a few thousand words you could read in a single sitting, with one idea at its center. Spend on purpose. Keep our dollars working at home. Plant the Black Seed.
A seed is meant to grow. This expanded edition grows that first book into a fuller one: where this idea comes from, what it has built before, what stands in its way today and where it could take us tomorrow.
You are holding four books in one.
The Seed is the decision—the simple, daily choice to invest in one another.
The Roots is the memory. Long before America, our ancestors counted, built and traded on a scale the world still studies. Within a single lifetime of freedom, our great-grandparents built the Black Wall Streets. Our inventors lit cities and charted paths to the stars. We will look honestly at what was taken from us, and at how strong we must be to have built so much in spite of it.
The Present is the work in front of us: where our money goes today, what other communities have learned, the simple math that turns one dollar into many, the contracts and markets that can grow our businesses, the health that every dream depends on, and a plan for every person at every age.
The Harvest is the vision. We will imagine the world we would have built if we had been free for the last four hundred years—and then step one hundred years into the future, into a network of three hundred cities where Black families own the land, the banks and the businesses, where every family is well, and where a single dollar goes around thirty-three times before it leaves.
Some of what you will read in the final part is a dream. But it is a dream built from real materials: real history, real numbers, real people and a real formula. Every fact in this book is listed in the Sources at the end, so you can check it yourself and share it with confidence.
Read this book with a pen in your hand. Mark the pages that stir you. Do the small step at the end of each chapter. Share it with your family, your church, your book club and your business partners. Talk about it at the kitchen table.
Most of all, remember that a seed does nothing in a pocket. It has to be planted.
With hope for the harvest,
TBO
PART ONE · THE SEED
Imagine what could happen if every dollar spent in our community became a seed planted for future generations. The story of Black prosperity is not only about individual achievement, but about how we collectively nurture and fuel Black businesses, ensuring that our seeds take root and flourish. This is the heart of the Black Seed concept—the purposeful decision to invest in one another, to see every transaction as an act of growth and empowerment.
Across the United States and around the world, Black communities bring creative vision, resilient entrepreneurship, and tremendous buying power. Yet, despite these strengths, the path to sustained financial growth remains challenging. Why? One of the reasons lies in the way our dollars move—or, more accurately, how quickly they leave our community. While the Black community possesses immense economic power, the Black dollar does not have enough opportunity to nourish our own households, businesses, and dreams before exiting to enrich others.
This book is an invitation—a call to action to reimagine the potential hidden within our wallets and choices. We will explore the difference economic unity can make, learn from other communities who have mastered the art of circulation, and take practical steps toward making "planting the Black Seed" not just a rallying cry, but a daily commitment.
